If you took a walk down the roads of Colombo, you’d notice that there are not many fit and slim people amongst us. This can be due to many reasons such as not having a balanced diet, lack of physical exercise or lack of proper health routines. However, there is also a growing trend among Lankans to get fit and they to do so by going to the gym, walking in parks, trying the new Zumba craze or trying out various diet programmes that are advertised by various places in the country.

For women, the biggest burden is getting rid of the pregnancy fat post birth. Today we meet Tania Deen who is one of the most experienced, well known fashion models in Sri Lanka. As one of the top models in Sri Lanka, she easily falls into the category of the pioneers in the modelling industry. Over the years she has been featured in almost every magazine and she has worked with almost every photographer in the island. Her captivating beauty has made her a number one choice for many fashion profiles and editorials. Believe it or not, this beauty is a mother of two and her latest angel was born just 9 months ago and right now she is back to being her healthy and fit self. I met up with Tania to learn her secrets.

Q – How long did you take to get back in shape?

A – I think within 4-5 months post birth. I dedicated myself to fitness and achieved what my body is today. It’s all about dedication. No matter what I do in the previous night I make sure I wake up by 5.45am every day and start my routine.

Q - Tania, tell us about your experience as a mother?

A – No matter what glamorous life we lead or try to achieve there is nothing bigger than being a mother. Most stereotypes think, we,  models are just out there partying, having fun and being irresponsible. Some don’t even want to show they are in a relationship, married to the outer world. On the other hand I’m a proud mother of two and I have a loving husband who taught me lots of qualities, starting from encouraging me to stay away from meat as I am a strong activist against animal cruelty. As a mother I feel I have lots of responsibilities and I know I have to continue as a fashion model as that’s what I was born to be.

Q –What about your diet?

A – Like I said I am a strict vegetarian. My advice is to always eat fresh fruits whenever you can. If you have the urge to eat a chocolate – then try to think of an apple, mango or an orange. You need to control yourself. We are all human and even I get the urge to have an ice cream or a rich piece of cake – but I somehow control myself. And I don’t push you to become a vegetarian as it is a huge life decision for many but try it as it cures many health problems automatically as well.
