Perera began his musical education at the Gampaha Sri Bodhi Vidyalaya in 1990, where he was chosen as the side-drummer in the band of Sri Bodhi Vidyalaya. After passing his Grade 5 scholarship exams in 1995, Perera was accepted at DS Senanayake College, Colombo where he specialized in Oriental Music. His musical versatility was quickly picked up on and in 2002, a year after joining the Gandharwa Orchestra as a keyboard player, he was invited to become its leader.
Encouraged by the growing recognition of his talent, Perera enrolled at the APIIT (Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology) in 2005, taking a diploma in Computing. Here Nisal Gangodage introduced him to the foundations of audio engineering and he began to compose tracks such as, ‘Thanuwak wee”, “Pipunuerabodu”, “Sundaraiae” and “Manabandu”. He also began working as a music producer for the popular band, Daddy, mixing and recording their singles,“Massina” and “Borukari”.
In 2006, Perera travelled to Singapore and enrolled at the SAE, (School of Audio Engineering), where his exceptional musical flair was immediately acknowledged, leading to him winning the award for best mixing engineer at the school in 2008. During this prolific period, Perera composed some of his best known songs, including “Rambari”, “Labandiye”, “Sudugawma” and “Desinpe”, which would all go on to become hits.
When Perera returned to Sri Lanka in 2008, he recorded and produced the music video and single for his first smash hit, “Rambari”. Its release in February 2009 on TV and radio stations across Asia attracted over night success and in 2010, Rambari was nominated as the most popular song of the year, eventually winning the Gold Award at the Derana music video awards.
Hot on the heels of the triumph of “Rambari”, Perera released “Sudugawma” and “RathuRatakaju” to critical acclaim and in 2011 he was asked to produce the official Sri Lankan cricket team anthem for the World Cup. He has also acted as the brand representative of Prima Kothhumee, Mobitel Smart and is currently the brand ambassador of Yamaha Music.
